Love Letter to Bonanza: Chiara's story
Chiara joined us in May 2025 for what she calls the "French surf retreat of dreams". This is her story <3
While it's been a rather overwhelming (intense? chaotic?) year so far, one of the absolute highlights was my week spent at Bonanza. A week that can only be described as the kind of surf camp my teenage self would’ve sold her soul for - and honestly, I still would.
Highlights may include the below - you were warned.
Firstly: the food. It was every bit(e) as delicious as it looks and then some. Frida and Theresa lovingly prepared the most gorgeous brunch buffets, awaiting us after every surf session at the villa. There is no better feeling (trust me!) than coming home from our morning surf sessions to the smell of fresh coffee, French pastries and fruit all beautifully prepared. Pictured below to prove my point.

The evening dinners were just as divine as something different awaited us each night - from cozy French classics to Margarita night. Getting a good night’s sleep is important, especially if you have a lot to digest (literally). The Bonanza villa is perched right above the beach complete with gorgeous wood panelled floors, antique furniture and the cosiest beds. As if that weren’t enough, our rooms were prepared with thoughtful treats and surprises, with snacks always within reach.
The surfing itself was pure magic. Each morning, we’d make our way down to the beach at Guéthary, boards tucked under our arms, excitement bubbling. There is something special about paddling out with a group go girls, cheering each other on as the waves rolled in. One day, a storm blew in but that didn’t keep us from surfing and having fun. If anything, surfing to the sound of distant thunder made us feel more alive and adventurous.

At Bonanza, Fun is spelled with a capital F. Who knew? We all did - because behind Bonanza are none other than bestie-duo Amanda and Elin, who met over their shared love for surfing. Ever since, they've created something truly special together at Bonanza. We were spoiled to say the least by Amanda’s surf theory lessons and Elin’s soul-filling Yin Yoga after days spent in the water.
They also shared their favorite hidden spots around Biarritz with us. Think vintage havens and surf stores with way-too-tempting treasures.
Finally, the community aspect was my favourite part of the retreat! There’s something magical that happens when you bring together a group of like-minded souls in such a beautiful space. We spent lazy afternoons in our sweatpants lounging around the house, chatting about all things life, love and everything in between (the girls get it). We’d watch the sun set over the ocean from the villa, sharing dreams and belly laughs - all the while eating the most delicious Tiramisu.
The connections formed here go far beyond retreat friendships, they last well beyond that special week. You'll arrive as a guest and leave as one of the Bonanza Girls. ♡
